A life open to our brothers and sisters, on our knees before God, and with our hearts burning with love for Christ.
Every September, the Church gratefully and joyfully remembers one of the most beloved saints of modern times: Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, affectionately known as Padre Pio. His life, marked by evangelical radicalism, pastoral dedication, and an unmistakable mystical fervor, remains a guiding light, helping the faithful rediscover the beauty of faith lived in the concrete realities of life. In a fragmented world, marked by noise and superficiality, we need to turn our gaze to authentic role models who show us that holiness is not a distant ideal, but a possible, everyday, and fruitful path . Padre Pio, through his life, ministry, and writings, presents himself as a master of prayer and self-giving, a true apostle of the confessional, and a witness to God's inexhaustible mercy.

Francesco Forgione was born on May 25, 1887, in Pietrelcina, Italy, into a simple and deeply religious family. From a young age, he displayed a special spiritual sensitivity and a strong desire to consecrate himself entirely to the Lord. He entered the Capuchin order, taking the name Pio in honor of Saint Pius V. He was ordained a priest in 1910 and, from the early years of his ministry, distinguished himself by his apostolic zeal and intense prayer life .
One of the most striking features of his life was the experience of the stigmata, which profoundly shaped him in relation to the crucified Christ and allowed him to experience the Lord's redemptive passion firsthand. However, what made him even greater in the eyes of God's people was his humility and daily dedication: long days in the confessional, spiritual direction to thousands of the faithful, Masses celebrated with intense devotion, and a pastoral closeness that touched hearts.
His great spiritual legacy
Father Pio was not only a mystic, but also an apostle of everyday life, a witness to the holiness lived through obedience, service, concrete acts of charity, and constant prayer. Among his greatest contributions was his use of a very simple yet highly effective means of communication in his time: letters. Through them, he accompanied hundreds of people, guiding them on their spiritual journey, encouraging them in times of trial, and teaching them to remain steadfast in the faith. His writings, filled with inner fire, constitute a true spiritual legacy that continues to illuminate the Church.

Saint Pius today
What can Saint Pio tell us, believers of the 21st century? His life is a call to evangelical consistency in the midst of a world in crisis; it is an invitation to faithful prayer, fraternal accompaniment, and radical trust in God's mercy. In times when there is much talk but little prayer, Padre Pio reminds us that the strength of the Christian lies in kneeling, in the fruitful silence of encountering Christ .
Furthermore, his figure particularly challenges pastors and pastoral agents: how much of our time and heart do we give to the souls entrusted to us? How do we accompany those who seek guidance and comfort? Saint Pio became a father to many because he knew how to spend his life to the fullest in service to his brothers and sisters.
His pastoral proposal
To live his message today, we have a very valuable work: Saint Pio of Pietrelcina: Letters, Spirituality, and Advice . This text compiles 150 of his letters, especially from his early years of religious life, and presents them as a practical resource for every Christian. What's interesting is that it's not just about reading them, but about praying with them and putting them into practice: each section includes biblical insights, questions for reflection, and a space to write down concrete commitments, like a true spiritual journal. It's an accessible and profound path so that the experience of faith doesn't remain merely an idea, but transforms daily life.
His letters are like burning embers that ignite the heart of the believer. In them, Padre Pio offers us simple yet profound advice that transcends time and continues to illuminate our journey of faith.
- “Never think, my dearest children, that distance can separate the souls that God has joined together…”
- “In the spiritual life, one must walk with great confidence.”
- “Pray, wait, and don’t worry. Worry is useless. Our merciful Lord will hear your prayer.”
This epistolary treasure is collected in the work: Saint Pio of Pietrelcina. Letters, spirituality and advice .
Saint Pio of Pietrelcina remains a prophetic witness of Christ for our time. His consecrated life, his passionate love for souls, his radical commitment to the priestly ministry, and his ability to communicate the faith through the written Word make him a shining example. May we, as we remember him this September, not only venerate him, but also allow ourselves to be challenged by his example. May we, like him, learn to live on our knees before the Lord, with open arms to our brothers and sisters, and with hearts ablaze with the love of Christ!
Personal consecration to God through the intercession of Padre Pio
Father of goodness and mercy, inexhaustible source of life and happiness, I ask you, through the intercession of Padre Pio, to grant me to be like him: simple and humble, like the little flowers of the field, free and joyful, like the birds of the sky; poor and hardworking, like his father Saint Francis.
Because I trust in your love and your grace, today I freely offer you all that I am and all that I have: I place my past in your mercy, I entrust my future to your providence, and I remain calm like a small child in the arms of his loving mother, trying to live one day at a time.
I surrender to you my memory, my intelligence, and my will. I consecrate to you my strength and my limitations: take me as I am and make of me, as you made of Pio of Pietrelcina, a good Christian and an honest citizen who praises you by serving my brothers and sisters. Amen.
