Our Lady of Mount Carmel: Star of the Sea in the Night of the World

Nuestra Señora del Carmen: Estrella del mar en la noche del mundo

Paulinas Colombia |

“From the mountain of the Lord a small cloud, like the palm of a hand, rose... and since then grace has not ceased to rain down.” - 1 Kings 18:44

I. In the silence of Carmel a flower bloomed

It all began atop an ancient mountain in the Holy Land, where the prophet Elijah, ardent sentinel of the living God, made Mount Carmel an altar of fire. In that sacred place, where earth meets heaven, a devotion was born that, like a gentle breeze, grew throughout history until it became a tempest of love.

The first Carmelite hermits, inspired by Elijah and his life of prayer and struggle for fidelity to God, made Carmel their home. Amidst the singing of psalms and echoes of prophecy, a certainty blossomed in the midst of the spiritual battle: God does not leave us alone. And who better than the Mother of the Lord, Mary Most Holy, to walk with them?

Thus was born the devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Flower of Carmel, the Queen of the Prophets, the lady of the mountain that rises in the midst of the valleys of the soul.

II. A mother dressed in sky

Devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel is not only the fruit of a mystical revelation, but also of a living history of spiritual motherhood. In the 13th century, Saint Simon Stock, superior general of the Carmelite Order in England, received from the Virgin a visible sign of her protection: the holy scapular .

According to tradition, Mary appeared to him surrounded by light and tenderness, giving him that small piece of cloth and uttering words that still move us today:

"This is the sign of my covenant. Whoever dies with it will not suffer eternal fire."

Since then, the scapular is not an amulet, but a Marian embrace, a mantle of love, a reminder that the Virgin walks with us, watches over us and leads us to the heart of Christ.

Every time someone wears that simple symbol, Mary seems to repeat: "Do not be afraid, my son, my daughter. I am with you. I carry you in my heart."

III. Carmen: a name that tastes like home

The name "Carmel" means "garden," "vineyard of the Lord," and so is the life of the Christian who allows himself to be touched by Mary: a land cultivated by her tenderness, a garden that flourishes under the shadow of the Most High.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the patron saint of sailors, fishermen, drivers, entire towns, and nations. She is invoked by those who go to war, those who sail through storms, and those who don't know which way to turn. She is the mother of mystics and the comfort of those who don't pray with words but weep in silence.

Throughout the centuries, it has touched the deepest fibers of the Hispanic American soul. In towns and cities, the processions of July 16th are veritable waves of faith. There is no corner where its name does not evoke a sigh, a candle, a supplication, or a song.

IV. A spirituality of gentle fire

And what does Our Lady of Mount Carmel teach us today?

It teaches us the art of contemplation amidst the noise. It reminds us that one can be a prophet through silence, a disciple through listening, a missionary through faithful love for Jesus.

María del Carmen does not walk alone: she carries in her heart the living Word of God. Her entire life was a “let it be done,” a melody of availability. Therefore, under her mantle, we learn to trust, to wait, to love as she did: without measure, without noise, without fear.
As the Gospel tells us:

“Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart” (Lk 2:19).
And from there, from her heart, she wants to teach us to pray, to live with meaning, to look beyond the immediate.

V. The promise of the novena: school of Marian love

Perhaps deep in your heart you feel the need to renew your faith, your hope, or your love. Perhaps you seek a voice that speaks to you gently, a gaze that understands you without judgment. Perhaps you are adrift at sea, without a compass.

Well, the Church —as a wise Mother— offers us the novena to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a nine-day journey to enter her spiritual school, allowing ourselves to be formed by her words, her gestures, and her motherly love.

Each day of this novena is like a stepping stone to the interior Carmel, where Mary awaits us with an open heart and a burning lamp. It's not just about praying, but about encountering her. It's not just about asking, but about learning to live a Marian life.

At Paulinas, we believe that the novena is not a magic formula, but a pilgrimage of the soul, an experience that can transform you, if you let yourself be guided by the Star of the Sea.

VI. Mother of the Mountain, Lady of the People

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is not a pious memory. She is the living presence of heaven on earth. She is the mother who walks with the poor, who intercedes for those who suffer, who accompanies those who love unseen. And today, more than ever, we need mothers like her, who never tire of hoping, of believing, of fighting. Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the soul of those who do not give up.

His feast day, July 16, is not just another day on the liturgical calendar. It is an opportunity to renew our covenant, to return to the Gospel with fresh eyes, to let ourselves be enveloped in his mantle of love.

“We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God… Do not despise our petitions, but deliver us from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin!”

Are you up for climbing Mount Carmel?

The Virgin Mary is already there, waiting for you to open the door.

And if you don't know how to begin, perhaps a small book with the scent of heaven—a simple yet powerful novena—is the starting point. Come, walk with Mary of Mount Carmel. She is already walking toward you.

Prayer

Most Holy Virgin of Carmel, I desire that all without exception may find refuge under the protective shadow of your holy scapular, that all may be united to you, my Mother, by the close and loving bonds of this your beloved emblem. O beauty of Carmel! Look upon us, reverently prostrate before your sacred image, and graciously grant us your loving protection. I commend to you the needs of our Holy Father, the Pope, and those of the Church, our Mother, as well as those of my nation and the whole world, my own needs, and those of my relatives and friends. Look with eyes of compassion upon so many poor sinners who offend your divine Son, and upon so many unbelievers who groan in the darkness of paganism. May all be converted and love you, my Mother, as I desire to love you now and for eternity.
Amen.
